This week I'll be attending the Green Business Conference taking place in San Francisco. When I mention the event to colleagues and clients I often get the question, what is green business?
Flash: What it is
Flash is a rich media technology used to incorporate animation, games and other aspects into a web site that HTML cannot. Content, links, images and animation can be fully customized to give the user a highly branded and richly designed experience. It is a wonderful medium that is effective in the right context.
Being a green business is more than using recycled paper and installing compact florescent lights, although that's a good start for any business. Green Business is a broad term that generally describes businesses conscious of their impact on the environment and society, the health and safety of employees, and the health and safety of the community in which they operate. Most importantly they demonstrate that a business can do all these things and make a profit.
What kinds of businesses are green?
The diversity is as wide as conventional business. There are green businesses in all categories. Here's a short list:
• Agriculture
• Architecture
• Energy
• Investment
• Travel/Hospitality
• Food service
• Packaged foods
• Health/Beauty
• Construction
• Marketing and design
And the list goes on.
For those of you interested in supporting green businesses you can attend the Green Festival this weekend: Saturday November 5th 10AM - 9PM and Sunday November 6th 11AM - 7PM.

Here's a list of a few notable Bay Area green businesses:
Comet Skateboardsuses sustainably harvested wood and non toxic finishes. And the factory where their skateboards are made is run on solar power.
Check out their web site at: www.cometskateboards.com
Pet Camphas become the third-largest energy generator in San Francisco. The two larger energy generators are actual power plants. An estimated $300,000 solar-panel system was installed on the roof of the 13,000-square-foot kennel, allowing Pet Camp to generate much of its own energy.
Pet Camp launched a dog waste compost project in February 2005. Seventy-five percent of the waste is diverted from land fill. The experimental composting project is the latest in a series of recycling projects. They arranged to have waste hauler Sunset Scavenger deliver about 200 pounds of waste a day to East Bay Municipal Utility District. The utility uses it to create methane gas to run turbines for the sewage treatment facility near the San Francisco Bay Bridge.

There are many more Bay Area green businesses. If you know of any others, feel free to send their names to info@pylonstudios.com. Better yet, if you know any green businesses that need marketing services such as promotional materials, email marketing, web sites or consulting, please send me the name of the business and the person responsible for marketing.
