Market Track interface: Case Study
In 1997 Pylon Studios was brought in to redesign the Barclays Global Investors web site and later to add a component called Market Track. This component was more than just a stock market chart on the home page. It used a technology developed by StockPoint which gave data on stocks, indices, currencies and more.
StockPoint's technology allowed a user to see the data of a given chart from a 52 week to an hourly segment. The interaction of this product was powerful and immediate.
MarketTrack was a component of the BGI site and not a separate site. We realized that the navigation within MarketTrack had to be in the same vicinity as the chart for easy access to the different indices, currencies or the stock symbol search within MarketTrack.
To avoid confusion it was important that the MarketTrack navigation look different than the main navigation for the BGI site but at the same time look like navigation instead of text or controls.
Our solution was to move controls and interface up above the chart which resulted in a chart that required little to no scrolling to see the data after applying the various control options. These options resulted in almost instantaneous changes so it was important for the user to see the results of what they had done as they were working with the MarketTrack tool.

Figure 1
The controls used to modify the data in Stockpoint's orginal chart design could not be seen in context with the chart. Users had to scroll down to make adjustments to the data in a chart, even on high resolution monitors.

We suggested moving the controls for Market Track next to the charts instead of underneath them. Moving the chart controls kept the chart and controls accessible to the user without scrolling.
