Blue & Gold Fleet, in conjunction with their Green Waves Program, continues Environmental Excellence ! !

In 1998 Blue & Gold Fleet, recognized the need for sustainable strategies and practices in its operations and launched the Green Waves program. The program, consisting of environmental initiatives, goals and targets, was developed by our Green Waves Team. The Team’s primary mission is the continuous improvement of Blue & Gold environmental practices through implementation of Green Waves strategies. The Team meets on a monthly basis to assess and reviews the overall effectiveness of the company’s environmental effort.

The Green Waves program assures Blue & Gold’s activities afford the highest possible level of resource protection to the public and the environment. Our goal is to exemplify best management practices, improve environmental sustain ability, and assure minimal environmental impacts from our operations. We continue to seek and adopt innovative strategies to improve Blue & Gold Fleet's performance in environmental management.

Over the last year Blue & Gold received numerous nationally recognized awards for its environmental programs and accomplishments. Blue & Gold was honored as the first Marine Terminal and the first Marine Maintenance Facility to be designated by the San Francisco Department of Public Health as a “Clean and Green” business. These awards clearly indicate that Blue and Gold has been widely recognized as an environmental champion of excellence.

The following awards have been presented to us over the last year:
The 2004 California Governor’s Environmental and Economic Achievement Award for Sustainability.

The National Park Service and DOI 2004 Environmental Achievement Award for Partnerships and Environmental Collaboration.

We have been recognized not just as a leader within his current industry but as an innovative environmental leader for all of California businesses.

The California Environmental Protection Agency Department of Toxic Substance Control has recognized Blue and Gold with the “DTSC P2” pollution prevention award for a successful initiative to reduce vessel bilge water oily waste slops.

In 2003 the California State Assembly, Nancy Pelosi, Barbara Boxer, and Dianne Feinstein recognized us for Richard Maddux's environmental leadership within the marine industry. Additionally the Port of San Francisco bestowed Blue and Gold with an award of recognition for environmental leadership along the SF waterfront.

NPS Corner
In our National Park

Service section of our newsletter we want to let you know what are the latest happenings with the NPS. Here are just a few things going on right now.

From the Brink to the Clink
A lone peregrine falcon, member of a species on the brink of extinction in the 1970’s, has returned to its Alcatraz roosting spots. If you are exceptionally lucky, you can spot it on the water tower or the historic power plant smokestack. The raptor will have its eye on the Rock’s pigeons and other tasty meals.

A New View of Baker Beach
There’s a new view at Baker Beach. In June, Presido remediation crews began clearing a U.S. Army landfill uphill from the beach, removing 1,500 truckloads of corroded metal pipes, concrete slabs, and soil contaminated with invisible contents such as PCBs and DDT. The sublimely named “Disturbed Area 3” (in remediation parlance) is planted with natives such as mock heather, lizard tail, and coyote bush.

Cliff House is Open Again
Enjoy the views of the Pacific Ocean and Seal Rocks from the public outdoor terraces of the Cliff House. The newly rehabilitated Cliff House Restaurant is open seven days a week for lunch and dinner; call 386-3330 for reservations. The Camera Obscura on the lower terrace is open seven days a week, weather permitting.
